Fully automatic pallet dispenser

ATS Group Tailored Machine Construction Material Handling

Simultaneous input of different pallet types

A fully automatic pallet dispenser was developed for an international player in the chemical sector. It was important that the project was 100% functional immediately after installation at the customer's premises. By first building up the installation at ATS, the customer's operators, foremen and maintenance technicians could also be trained by us. As a result, the employees are fully familiar with the machine even before the machine is taken into use by the customer. An additional advantage is that the customer's conversion can be done in record time: only a few weeks have to be allowed for construction, testing and commissioning on site.

Installation functionality

Up to five different pallet types can be fed simultaneously into the system via four separate infeed tracks on stacks of pallets that are sometimes very poorly stacked. If the incoming pallets are made of plastic, they are immediately transported to buffer stations. If the pallets are made of wood, a bottom cardboard must first be placed on the pallet, this cardboard must be pushed open, an insert cardboard must be placed in it and then everything must be stapled together. The finished pallets can then also be taken to a buffer station. This way, there are always enough pallets available to supply the next installation in the process with different types of finished pallets at short notice.

Challenges

The great challenge in this project lies in its great flexibility: the choice of pallets in the buffers is completely independent of the choice of pallets on the infeed conveyors. To guarantee this, it was decided to place a robot on a track and have it transport the pallets from the infeed conveyors to the buffers.

A second robot was hung upside down on a gantry. This robot pushes out the corners of the cartons and then, at completely free spots, fixes the cartons to the pallet.

In addition to the flexibility, the complexity was also a challenge. Complex, because this installation runs fully automatically, without operator intervention.
