Battery storage will increase flexibility

The major intention of the investment in a battery storage system on it's own production site in Ghent, is a higher level of self-consumption of electricity out of PV. Electricity that is generated out of PV is 3 to 4 times less expensive then energy from the grid. Moreover, studies claim that the market price of electricity will raise up to 200% by 2030. With the installation of a BESS, self-consumption on the new site will increase from 40% to 64%. Overall, an additional 24% of energy consumption on the new ATS site will be provided by energy that is 4 times cheaper.


Intelligence is key

In a residential installation, the thermostat regulates the heating system. In case of faulty regulation, it is possible that more energy is consumed, even on high efficiency installations. Equal reasoning can be applied for a BESS: the battery storage system will load and unload in an intelligent way, based on weather forecasts, current en estimated energy prices, estimated consumption, etc.

For this, ATS depends on a service provider that will elaborate an in the cloud Energy Management System (EMS) based on MiSo (multiple input– single output). When it comes to input, interaction with the energy market is important and necessary. Herewith, EDF Luminus is a key player. Through our own designed Dataflow Management System (DMS) in a Siemens based Desigo CC systeem, the EMS will receive relevant data. Semi-autonomous decisions will be made based on this EMS to increase the efficiency of the battery.


The cloud?

As an installer, ATS is aware of the risks of cloud based computed in critical Industrial environments. Nor the cloud nor the BESS should have an impact on the continuity of the processes. That's why ATS has chosen to decouple the BMS and the BESS. Additionally, several protection mechanisms are specifically engineered. For example, there is an intelligent control of the temperature on the transformator which decreases the load on the BESS coupled winding if needed. During the islanding mode operation, the BESS inverter is controlled in such manner that, even as the grid is absent, there is still a priority to supply the required power via the installed PV installation. This will reduce the load on the batteries and consequently increases the autonomy time of the BESS. 

At this stage the concept is fully designed. The delivery of the battery and the practical integration is scheduled for quarter 3 of this year, and the aim is to have the BESS fully operational by end 2018.
