Automation Engineer R&D - Merelbeke

The Industry 4.0 era is leading us to an even greater shift from hardware to software. Industrial customers are working with ATS Group to build their factory of the future, where software integration is no longer an optional topic.

So the Automation Business Unit's software team is looking for reinforcement at the R&D level.


  • As an R&D automation engineer, you will contribute to internal development and standardization independently or as part of a team. From programming to handover to the project team with necessary aftercare and documentation.
  • Together with the team, you discuss specifications and design.
  • Based on the application, you take care of PLC, HMI and/or SCADA programming.
  • You will work as an internal developer on standard logic destined for 1 of our following industrial domains: Process, discrete/motion, robotics/AMR, custom machine building.
  • Depending on competence and commitment, you can advance within the same domain to a senior position where you will coordinate and manage fellow engineers.
  • Works from our office in Merelbeke.


  • Master's or bachelor's degree with preference in Industrial Sciences Automation, Electrical Engineering or Electromechanics.
  • 3-5y software experience, PLC and SCADA
  • Experience with Siemens (S7, TIA, WinCC), Inition is a plus.
  • Experience with other programming languages is a plus such as Python, C#, SQL, among others.
  • Proficient and proactive
  • Eye for detail, thinker who leaves nothing to chance, researches and asks critical questions.
  • Act pragmatically when necessary without losing sight of quality.
  • Possess graphic understanding is a plus.
  • You can express yourself fluently in Dutch. You understand and speak English and you can manage in French.
  • You are in possession of a driver's license B.
